Page 3 How to add a Gem Stone to PMC3 Pendant

Page 3

Drills used to make a setting for the Gem stone. Find a bit that is slightly smaller than your stone. I use these by hand because I only want to remove a little at a time till I get the stone to fit. The clay will shrink which helps hold the stone but I still use a bezel pusher to make a secure setting.

A finished piece with Tanzanite in the center

The finished piece with the stone set into it. I fired this piece with the stone in place because Tanzanite can be fired, not all stones can be fired in place without the risk of ruining the stone. Most synthetic stones are safe but it is better to research your stone before firing. I think the RIO Grande catalogue has a list of safe stones. You can prepare a spot for the stone and add it later. I also am making a bale which I will cold connect to the top. I will post a photo when it's done. This is just a quick over view of the process. I use a programable kiln to dry the piece or remove the binder so your left with pure silver (.999). It is also easier to add the bail using clay although you can also solder one on after the fact.
